Kasaragod, Jun 30: The police have registered a case against a 40-year-old woman on the charge of illegally adopting a three-week-old girl from a relative from Karnataka’s Chitradurga town.

The Manjeswaram police, acting on a complaint lodged by Childline, registered the case against the woman, who has no children, under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, sub inspector E. Anoop Kumar said here on Thursday.

The woman, a resident of Pathwadi, near Uppala, told the police that she adopted the child with good intentions after her financially poor relative agreed to part with the child.

No valid document

Mr. Anoop Kumar said the child could be adopted only after abiding by the formalities involved in the process. An inquiry found that the woman did not possess any valid document for bringing the foster child to her residence.

The police will visit Chitradurga to gather details of the case, he said, adding that the girl was shifted to a child home at Pattuvam in Kannur.
