Kasaragod, Jul 6: Notwithstanding the pre-monsoon cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns, over 11 lakh people have sought treatment for viral fever at the outpatient wing of hospitals this year in the district. Of the 10,193 people who sought treatment for various diseases at hospitals in the district on Tuesday, 848 were diagnosed with viral fever. This year, 52,236 people were hospitalised for viral fever in the district, Deputy District Medical Officer E. Mohanan has said.

Yesterday, one confirmed and 24 suspected cases of dengue were reported in the district. Mr. Mohanan attributed the situation to the people’s apathetic attitude to checking mosquito breeding in households and public places.

The majority of dengue cases were reported from West Eleri, Balal, Kodome-Beluru, Kuttikole, Madikkai, Chamnad, Enmakaje, and Karindalam panchayats.

He said 113 H1N1 cases were reported in the district this year.

There are reports of patients, especially those reporting with symptoms of dengue, being fleeced by labs for taking various tests.

The charges levied by private laboratories close to government hospitals are on the higher side and the patients are forced to approach them to save time, a fever patient said.
