GMU students celebrate cultural diversity on Global Day 2018

Gulf Medical University (GMU), the leading medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group celebrated its annual ‘Global Day 2018’ on 16th March 2018. More than 3000 attendees including the students and staff of the University as well as their families and friends gathered at the University grounds to join the celebrations. Celebrated every year, the GMU Global Day seeks to admire the unity in cultural diversity of GMU’s student community hailing from over 80 nationalities. The event gives the students an opportunity to display the essence of their ethnicities and cultures.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor of GMU was the chief guest of GMU Global Day 2018. The celebrations were inaugurated by Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Vice Provost - Academics, in the presence of the Deans of GMU’s colleges. Accompanied by the Vice Provost and Deans, the Chancellor toured the country pavilions where students had exhibited the food and costumes, as well as other exhibits relevant to their culture and history. Admiring the students’ efforts, he said that the annual Global Day was an occasion to celebrate the togetherness of GMU’s students and staff, emphasizing the University’s ‘Unity in Diversity’. 

The GMU campus gleamed with colors and adornments as individual countries set up their pavilions to display their ethnic costumes and cuisines. Students were dressed in their respective traditional attires, and performed their traditional music and dance forms on stage, entertaining the audience with some great displays of talent.  Various competitions were held, such as selection of the best pavilion, food, hospitality, teamwork, country performances, as well as talent and fashion shows.

Individual pavilions were set up for the following countries: Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, India, Egypt and Yemen. Prizes were awarded to the winners of competitions in various categories.

Best Food: Bahrain & Yemen

Best Entrance Gate: UAE

Best Hospitality: Saudi Arabia

Best Teamwork: Egypt

Best Stall: UAE & Bahrain (1st Prize), Yemen & Saudi Arabia (2nd Prize), Jordan/Palestine & Syria/Lebanon (3rd Prize)

Cultural Performance: India (1st Prize), Nigeria (2nd Prize), Iraq & Palestine (3rd Prize)

Fashion Show – Male: Syria (1st Prize), India (2nd Prize), Egypt (3rd Prize)

Fashion Show – Female: Syria (1st Prize), India (2nd Prize), Egypt (3rd Prize)

Talent Show: Rhythm Risers (1st Prize), Mr. Shariq Khan & Mr. Shone Joe Ukken (2nd Prize), Ms. Aishwarya Nair (3rd Prize)
