Torture of school children for ego trips?

Mangalore: If one had visited even one of the venues where the students were made to perform Yoga by the administrators, just to make an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, a sensible mind would be shocked by the state of negligence in which the innocent kids were made to perform an ancient knowledge of health and well-being.

yoga

It is a known fact that Yoga is performed atBrahmi Muhurtha', that is around the break of dawn and well before sunrise, at about 4.30 am and can be done even till 9 am because of the medicinal benefits the practicing body receives from the rays of sun. Beyond this time, the sun's rays get harsh and may cause damage to the skin. It is also advised not to perform the yoga till 4 pm in the evening.

However, when I visited Sharada Vidyalaya in Mangalore, one of the ten centres in DK district, I was taken by surprise to see few thousand children sprawled on the grounds engaging themselves in contortions under the directions of someone on the stage.

While the kids were sweating it out under red hot sun, the VIPs including U.T.Khader, the Minister for Health and others who perhaps did not realize that the promotion of health is not making children roll on the ground under hot sun, sat smugly under the fan.

Can this even be called yoga, a practice that originated and always belonged among the ascetics of ancient India? Are these young children ascetics of any kind? Have they followed the rules that are of paramount importance before practicing yoga?

The Friday's episode created a sense of confusion. It was being held under the guidance of a head of a renowned pilgrim centre of the region, who has had held several de-addiction camps. Off late, since he is facing several allegations, which have marred his glory, one wonders if this event was a desperate bid to enter into the Guinness Book of World Records or it was an attempt to save the sagging image of the head of the pilgrim centre.

If image makeover is the aim, then how about a Guinness book of world records for the maximum number of unnatural deaths of women of a particular age group in a single location, is something that crops up in every single mind.

Well, to talk of the Guinness Book of World Records itself, it is not a secret that Guinness is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803) at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Guinness is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is brewed in almost 60 countries and is available in over 100. Annual sales total 850 million litres (1.5 billion imperial or 1.8 billion US pints).

Sir Hugh Beaver, Chairman of the Guinness Brewery, was out hunting game birds by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland, when he misses a shot at a golden plover. Sir Hugh wondered if the plover is the fastest game bird in Europe but can't find a reference book that answers the question.

Now the point is why the claimants of a legacy of the ancient civilization of India look up to getting a place in an organization created by a beer manufacturer as a sort of advertising tool for its product? Or does it shows the discrepancy of  the person who is supposed to be the driving force behind this so called event?

But, if one critically looks at the event, it could easily earn a place for an event where maximum number of children were tortured under the hot sun to bring glory to someone else.

Does this event not amount to violation of child rights? Should the education department, the CWC and the childline not hold inquire into this so called yoga class which is just an attempt to boost the sagging image of a group.
