Veteran actress-director Vijaya Nirmala dies at 73 in Hyderabad

Chennai, Jun 27: Popular director and actress G Vijaya Nirmala, aged 73, was suffering from age-related illness. She was admitted to the Continental Hospital in Gachibowli where she is said to have suffered cardiac arrest. She breathed her last on Thursday.

She is survived by husband Krishna and son Vijaya Naresh. Mahesh Babu and Manjula Ghattamaneni are her step-children.

Her mortal remains will be brought to her residence in Nanakramguda at around 11 AM. The final rites will be performed tomorrow, according to sources.

The entire film fraternity is shocked by the sudden demise of Vijaya Nirmala. Many celebrities took to social media to express their grief over the death of Nirmala.

Vijaya Nirmala was a trailblazer in Tollywood. Born on February 20, 1946, in Tamil Nadu, she entered Kollywood at the age of seven by acting in a Tamil film called Matsyarekha. She then went on to act in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films and has around 200 movies to her credit.

At first, Nirmala began her career as an actor. However, she went on to take up various other roles such as director and producer. She had directed 44 Telugu films and entered the Guinness Book of World Records for being a female director to do the most number of films.

In 2008, she was conferred with Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for her contribution to the Telugu film industry. Some of her notable works include Panduranga Mahatyam, Poola Rangadu, Aatimiyulu, Tata Manavadu, Buddhimantudu, Marina Manishi among others.
