CPIM stages dharna against atrocities on women

August 24, 2014

Udupi, Aug 24: The district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna in front of the Clock Tower here on Thursday against the increasing atrocities on women across the country.

Atrocities on women
CPI(M) leader Balakrishna Shetty said assaults on women, children and people with disabilities were being reportedly on a daily basis, he said.

The fact that some adolescents were indulging in crime was shocking, he said.

In nearly 96 per cent of sexual harassment and assault cases, it was the relatives and friends, who were perpetrators of crime, he said.

The recent sexual assault on a six-year-old girl in Bangalore, the mysterious deaths of a 17-year-old girl at Shiroor about a month ago and that of another girl student in Brahmavar two years ago, were some instances of increase in atrocities quoted.

A few months ago, a female professor from Manipal University was asked to leave the dining hall of Sri Krishna Math/Temple here. This was a case of mental harassment and caste discrimination, Mr. Shetty said.
