Kasaragod, May 16: Unidentified persons set on fire the Indian Union Muslim League's Kalikadavu panchayat committee office gutting valuable documents and furniture late Sunday night.

The incident was noticed early on Monday. There was extensive damage to the building, located in the southern tip of the district, Neeleswaram Circle Inspector E. Unnikrishnan said. The police have launched a probe into the incident

It is believed that petrol was sprinkled by opening the window to set on fire the building. The locality had not witnessed any kind of political skirmishes involving rival groups in recent years, he said.

Senior police officers of nearby Chandera station headed by Mr. Unnikrishnan visited the spot as part of the investigation.
