Through a voluntary organisation FSL India which provides placements to volunteers in the country, Milena Dehn came to India in September, 2014 to assist teachers at Chetana Special School located in Karkala.

The school which is run by Bharathi Seva Mandali, provides special children with the opportunity to learn activities of daily living skills. This is offered to the children in various levels of learning such as pre-primary, primary, secondary, pre-vocational and vocational training, depending on ability of the children.

Once she completed her Plus 2 course in Germany, Milena opted to volunteer at the school for a period of nine months. She sees helping out with the teachers and staff at the school as a wonderful opportunity and expresses satisfaction in her voluntary work.

Milena is learning how to take care of special children at the school. “Supporting teachers in the school has given me hands-on experience with challenged kids. Since the attention span of such children can be poor, their area of interest should be identified and nurtured first,” she said.

Along with the voluntary service, this foreign national is also learning to converse in Kannada language.

Milena, along with the other staff of the school, sees a ray of hope for the challenged children so that with time, they can socialize and work on their own for providing for themselves.
