Udupi, Jul 15: Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis chaired a meeting on the modalities of the formation of three new taluks in the district on Friday.
The three new taluks announced by the State government in the budget session are: Kaup and Brahmavar, which have to be carved out from the present Udupi taluk, and Byndoor, which has to be carved out from the present Kundapur taluk.
Kundapur MLA Halady Srinivas Shetty and MLCs Pratapchandra Shetty and Kota Srinivas Poojary opined that it would be better if the gram panchayats held gram sabhas. All the guidelines from the government regarding the formation of new taluks should be followed, they said.
They urged the district administration to give importance to the opinion of people in gram panchayats lying on the borders of the proposed new taluks.
Ms. Francis directed the officers to ensure that gram panchayats hold special gram sabhas and submit the resolutions passed to the district administration.
She also directed them to identify the land for setting up taluk-level offices and details of the staff required for these offices.
