Mangalore, June 24: The runway of the Mangalore International Airport will be extended from 2,450 metres to 3,560 metres, for which 285 acres of land will be acquired said Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily.

He was briefing media persons on the upcoming developmental projects in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, after chairing a review meet on various projects and issues, at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday

Once a proposal has been sent to the Airport Authority of India, a project report should be prepared and sent, before the commencement of the work, Mr Moily said.

Development projects

Mr Moily said that a 'Greenfield Highway Corridor' project to connect Chennai and Mangalore through Bangalore, which had previously been debated about, would be given momentum for better inter-port connectivity. This highway corridor would offer better connectivity between the two ports, he said.

He said that a proposal had been placed with the NHAI to upgrade the stretch linking Bangalore-Mysore and Madikeri-Mangalore and convert them into national highways. The proposal has been extended to Mangalore-Belthangady-Chikmagalur stretch also, he said.

Similarly, the four-laning of the road from Mangalore to Karkala via Moodbidri has also commenced, in the first phase. A proposal to convert the road from Bantwal to Hassan into a four-lane highway had been handed over to the NHAI. Officials have been also directed to take steps to hasten the widening of the national highway between B C Road to Suratkal. A proposal to concretise the Suratkal-Jokatte stretch has also been put forward, he said.

New railway routes

Mr Moily said that two new railway routes in the twin districts, which had been included in the railway budget two years ago, would soon be established.  Work on railway routes linking Kulur-Karkala-Uppingady and Padubidri-Karkala-Moodbidri-Venoor will soon commence. A survey had been conducted on the feasibility on the routes and the Railway Minister had given his nod for the project, he said.

MSEZ-MRPL issue

On issues regarding Mangalore SEZ and MRPL, Mr Moily said that the areas along Jokatte – Kulai had been inspected and discussions were held to prepare a blueprint of the region, seeking better roads, rehabilitation and employment of the local families.

The issue would be examined closely by the district in-charge minister, deputy commissioner, MLAs and other senior officials in the next ten days, so that the matter will be resolved in 20 days' time, said the minister.

He said that Rs 1 crore had been sanctioned to the blood bank at the Government Lady Goschen hospital in the city. The construction work of the new block of the hospital is being done at a good pace and the block will be fully completed by December 2014, he assured.

To check sea-erosion along the coastline of the state, a project sponsored by Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be taken up at the cost of Rs 911 crores in the three coastal districts in three phases, he said.

After mulling over the project, a proposal has been sent to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to construct a tunnel through the Shiradi Ghats along the Mangalore-Shimoga route for better conveyance of traffic along the route. A Japanese company had been called upon to undertake the tunnel work, he said.

Minister for Fisheries Abhaychandra Jain, MLA Moideen Bava, Deputy Commissioner N Prakash and others were present.

Work unitedly

Earlier, he visited the DK District Congress office in the city and advised the party members to work with unity and integrity.

Adderssing a press conference, he directed the ministers and MLAs to form a committee to study and list out the developmental plans that required attention in the twin districts, so that he could provide necessary assistance in the same.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former union minister C M Ibrahim, who was expelled from Janata Dal (Secular) for protesting against party’s alliance with BJP, has stressed on need for a third front not just at the national level, but also in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, he said he’s planning to form a third front in Karnataka along with Lingayat Seer Dingaleshwar Swami.

Ibrahim said that he will tour the state between April 27 and May 4 and that he would meet Dingaleshwar Swami on April 29. “There is a need for the third front in this country. We will try to establish a third front in association with the seer and we hope we will be successful in those efforts,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with the Congress for not doing enough to gain the full confidence of Muslims, Ibrahim said that Congress is concentrating only on certain communities for votes, and ignoring Muslims.

“The Congress is not even caring for Muslims and Dalit votes. In some Muslim areas they did not even hold campaigns seeking votes and trying to convince the communities which never vote in their favour. I fear this may lead to low turnout and Congress may lose its vote base,” he opined.

Mentioning about guarantees on which Congress is strongly relying during this election, Ibrahim said, such things won’t work all the time. “Guarantees will not work anymore. Every election you need to give something new to the voters,” he added.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that Congress is trying to appease minorities for votes, Ibrahim requested both Congress and BJP parties not bring Muslims between them. “I request both parties. Leave us alone. Don’t make us sandwiches for your political sake. We are living with peace and hope even the Prime Minister will understand this,” Ibrahim added.

Launching a broadside against Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Ibrahim said, “Deve Gowda has sold his personality itself. Whatever I have told about JD(S) has come true. I pity, a former Prime Minister should not have come to this stage,” he said.

blastsuspects.jpg

Bengaluru, Apr 12: The two men who allegedly plotted and executed the blast that rocked Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru last month have been arrested from Kanthi in Bengal's East Midnapore district, the National Investigation Agency said Friday morning.

Mussavir Hussain Shazeb and Abdul Matheen Taha were caught after a joint operation by central intelligence agencies and police from Bengal, Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala, and are en route to Kolkata, the anti-terror agency said in a statement.

The available evidence indicates Shazeb planted the explosive device, placed inside a backpack, at the popular eatery. Taha was responsible for planning the attack and for their disappearance.

These are the second and third arrests in this case; last month Muzammil Shareef, who extended logistical support to the Shazeb and Taha, was taken into custody.

Residents of Karnataka's Shivamogga district, Shazeb and Taha were traced to Kanthi after officials conducted searches at 18 locations across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and even Uttar Pradesh.

The blast at Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe on March 1 injured 10 people, customers and staff.

Fortunately there were no deaths; the bag containing the explosives was placed in a relatively less crowded area and against a large pillar that absorbed the brunt of the explosion.

After the blast, the NIA released photos and videos of the accused, as seen on CCTV cameras across Bengaluru. In one such clip, the accused - wearing a face mask - was seen boarding a bus.

The agency had declared a reward of ₹ 10 lakh for information leading to the arrest of each accused. The agency had also questioned their acquaintances, including college and school friends.

The Rameshwaram Cafe, which suffered extensive damage after the blast, reopened eight days later, with enhanced security measures including metal detectors.

BJP’s reaction

The Karnataka BJP on Friday attacked the Siddaramaiah government after the arrest of two men by the NIA in the Bengaluru cafe blast case, saying that the terrorists were 'brothers' of the Congress.

Taking to social media, Karnataka BJP stated, “National Investigation Agency (NIA) detains ‘Brothers’ of Congress in Rameshwaram Blast case. Ever since Jihadi Tipu Sultan’s admirers came to power in Karnataka, terrorists have got a free ride.”

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s ‘Ease of Doing Terror’ Policies have prompted ISIS to now set up its shop in Karnataka. The only guarantee that CM Siddaramaiah has fulfilled is converting prosperous Karnataka into a terror hub,” the BJP stated.
