Thomson Reuters, a UK-based multi-media corporation, has recently released its report The Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014', listing more than 3200 scientists who are found as the leading contributors in some hot fields of scientific research during the previous year.

The mention of top researchers around the world is based on their distinction earned due to the highest number of articles that rank among those most frequently cited by other researchers.

From among scientists of 51 countries who surfaced in the study, 72 belong to seven Muslim countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, Jordon, Malaysia and UAE. These countries respectively have 34, 11, 10, 8, 4, 3 and 2 most influential scientific minds of the surveyed year and accordingly have been put on 13th, 24th, 26th, 28th, 34th, 40th and 44th slabs in the world for the unique distinction.

Out of the total names from Saudi universities, almost half are Muslims whereas the rest are Christians, Hindus and Chinese. Around 35 Muslim scientists were noted to be working in USA, Canada, UK and other countries. Thus, overall 92 Muslim names may be noted from the list.

Saudi Arabia's ascendance on the science ladder may surprise many as Iran and Turkey are generally found as the leading Muslim countries in science research publications. Countries like Israel, India and Russia can be seen in the Thompson Reuters' survey on 20th, 22nd and 29th positions respectively. Thus, Saudi Arabia is ahead of Israel by 7 positions and four Muslim countries are better than Russia and also other 11 western countries put on the list.

No doubt, the Saudi government's educational reforms during the past decade have made the country emerge as the leading country of the Muslim world on the Thompson Reuters list of 2014. The country is presently spending more than 10% of its GDP on the promotion of education and scientific research.

It is evident from the survey of the Thompson Reuters that only 3% Muslim scientists could find place in the list of over 3200 names. However, it is still higher than some of the leading third world countries such as India and Brazil, which have only 14 and 5 mentions in the list respectively. As may be anticipated, USA tops the list with 1725 instances followed by UK and China with 309 and 166 instances respectively.

It is a matter of satisfaction that a few Muslim countries have now come up to compete with many western countries in the field of scientific advancement.

At least seven people have been killed when Israeli warplanes bombed an emergency center in southern Lebanon near the border with the 1948 Israeli-occupied territories with air-to-surface missiles, according to Lebanese security sources.

Two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity said early on Wednesday that the strike targeted the Islamic Group’s emergency and relief center in Lebanon’s southern village of Habbariyeh.

Jamaa Islamiya, a Lebanese group closely linked to the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, said in a statement that “a number” of people had been killed, and called the strike a “heinous crime.”

An official from the group said “seven rescuers” were killed in the aerial assault.

Another Jamaa Islamiya official, also requesting anonymity, said a dozen medical staff were in the emergency center at the time of the strike, adding that bodies were being pulled from the rubble.

Lebanese lawmaker Hassan Mrad said “the Israeli aggression on Habbariyeh adds to the long list of Israeli crimes.”

Israel has been launching air strikes against Lebanon since the beginning of its onslaught against the Gaza Strip in early October.

An Israeli strike knocked down part of a building in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh on February 14, killing seven members of the same family, including a child, Lebanon’s official National News Agency said. A boy initially reported missing was found alive under the rubble.

In a separate Israeli attack, a woman and her two children were killed in the village of as-Sawana in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli regime launched its devastating hostilities in the Gaza Strip on October 7 after the territory’s Hamas-led Palestinian resistance groups carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Israel's raids have resulted in retaliatory strikes from Hezbollah in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

The movement has vowed to keep up its retaliatory operations as long as the Tel Aviv regime continues its onslaught on Gaza.

The Israeli campaign in Gaza has killed at least 32,414 people, most of them women and children. Another 74,787 individuals have also been wounded.

Bengaluru, Mar 19: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that the Congress will split in three months after the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and its impact will be visible on the Siddaramaiah-led state government.

"Due to internal squabbles, the state government will not last long," the BJP leader said.

Talking to reporters on Monday, he said the sitting MP from the Gadag-Haveri constituency, Shivakumar Udasi, has done a lot of development work and implemented the Central government's schemes effectively.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surely become the PM for the third time. The overall response has been good in the Gadag-Haveri Lok Sabha constituency," the former Karnataka chief minister said.

Asked if he was contesting the election in a half-hearted manner in the Gadag-Haveri seat, Bommai said "such a question does not arise when the party's high command gives instructions".

He said he would respect his opponent and not take anyone lightly.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: Former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor at his residence in Bengaluru last month.

Yediyurappa, 81, was booked after a woman lodged a complaint saying that she visited his residence on February 2 seeking justice in a rape case against her daughter and sought that a special investigation team (SIT) be formed to look into the case.

According to the first information report (FIR), Yediyurappa allegedly took the minor to a room, closed the door and sexually assaulted her. The woman further alleged in the FIR that when she confronted Yediyurappa, he said that he was checking if the girl was raped or not. Yediyurappa later allegedly apologised and asked the woman not to reveal the matter to anyone.

The Sadashivanagar police in Bengaluru have registered a case under Section 8 (commit sexual assault) of the Pocso Act and Section 354 (a) (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Reacting to the allegations, the former CM said that around one-and-a-half months ago, they (the victim and her mother) had come to his house seeking help and he had taken them inside.

“After listening to her, I called the city police commissioner B Dayananda over phone seeking to address her problem. Later, they spoke against me and I then suspected that there is some health problem with her. I sent them to city police commissioner’s office. I even gave her some money as they were in distress. I came to know that an FIR has been registered and will look into it. But this is what I get for helping someone,” he added.
