Moodbidri, Jul 22: A mass Iftar get-together was organized for around 3,000 people by Alva's Education Foundation, Moodbidri recently for the 11th consecutive year during the month of Ramadan.
In an example of showing integration and religious tolerance, founder of the educational institution Dr M Mohan Alva had been organising Iftar get-togethers from the past ten years in the college campus for the benefit of students and locals belonging to the Muslim faith.
On Sunday, the Iftar programme was organised for the 11th year in the campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore North MLA B A Moidin Bava praised the efforts of Dr Alva who had upheld integration by giving equal opportunity to observe and celebrate festivals of different religions.
Founder of Shanthi Prakashana publication house Mohammed Kunhi said that the teachings of Islam were not limited only to celebrating festivals, but they should be inculcated to make one's life prosperous. It is possible to control one's body and mind through fasting, he said.
Dr Mohan Alva said that such programmes were necessary to build harmonious relations in the country at a time when there were huge gaps between communities. To achieve this goal, an Iftar programme is held annually for around 1,500 students and locals during Ramadan.
Former minister K Amarnath Shetty also spoke on the occasion.
