Mangalore, Aug 2: A Catholic woman from Mangalore has filed a case of being duped by a man from Hyderabad after he tricked her into marriage by falsely claiming to be a Protestant Christian and a bachelor.
In her complaint, Jyothi Teresa Pereira, a resident of Mangalore, said that she came across a man named Naveen Ebenezer from Hyderabad over a matrimonial website Shaadi.com few years ago in 2007. He had reportedly claimed that he was unmarried and was looking for a match. He had also falsely claimed that he was a Protestant Christian.
According to the complaint, Naveen had reportedly coaxed Jyothi into marrying him after convincing that he would convert into a Roman Catholic, and agreeing to this, the couple got married before a marriage notary under the Christian Marriage act two years later in July 2009.
However, after five years of marriage, Naveen disclosed that he belonged to the Scheduled Caste community and subsequently, managed to avoid her.
After the revelation, Jyothi filed a complaint alleging fraud and cheating by making false statements. It is said that he had produced a fake affidavit stating that he was a Christian.
A case had been registered under IPC Section 420 at Mangalore South police station and preliminary inquiry revealed that the accused was a conman who had duped several women in a similar fashion
