Mangalore, Sep 1: It was a joyous occasion and a day of celebration when the entire village came together and hosted the marriage ceremony of a physically disabled girl from their village in Chelur.
The groom Rajesh agreed to marry and stand by Bhavya, who is deaf and mute by birth. The wedding was held and solemnised at Shree Durga Parameshwari temple at Kateel.
Elated by the proposal for Bhavya, the villagers themselves organised and footed the entire cost of the reception ceremony of the couple.
Bhavya is the daughter of D Chandrashekhar. Having lost her mother, her only living family apart from her father is her brother.
Having given up their land for the expansion of MRPL, the poor family now resides in Chelur. Bhavya, being deaf and mute, was being looked after by the family of Janardhan from Nerekare near Panambur. Bhavya used to earn her livelihood as a beedi worker.
The match was fixed between them by a mutual acquaintance. Rajesh, a resident of Uppala, agreed to marry Bhavya without any demands of dowry, proving to be an ideal groom.
It is said that the cost of the reception ceremony was around Rs 1.75 lakhs to Rs 2 lakhs, which was entirely footed by the villagers and few donors. Along with bearing the cost of the ceremony, the villagers also gave the bride gold jewellery including a mangalsutra.
