Kasargod, Sep 3: The Kasargod Additional District Sessions Court has found seven persons guilty in the murder of NRI businessman and resident of Trikaripur, A B Abdul Salam Haji, 59, during a robbery in 2013.

The persons who are held guilty are the first accused C.K. Muhammed Noushad (37) from Anachal in Neeleswaram; O.M. Askar (31) from Thrissur, Muhammed Rameez (28) from Kottapuram near Neeleswaram, O.M. Shihab (33) from Thrissur, C. Nimith (43) of Eda Chovva in Kannur, K.P. Ameer (25) of Changaramkulam in Malappuram, and M.K. Jaseer (22) of Manthalam in Malappuram.

They will be sentenced on Thursday. They may face up to life imprisonment.

The eighth accused, A Mohsin of Nileshwaram, whose car was used for the crime, was let off for lack of evidence. Accused number one and three, Naushad and Rameez, are distantly related to Salam Haji and had zeroed in on his house to make a quick buck. The prosecution was represented by senior lawyers P Rajan and M J Johnson. According to the prosecution, the gang, led by Naushad and Rameez, turned up at Salam Haji's house around 10.30 pm on August 4, 2013.

On hearing the calling bell, Salam Haji opened the door and five members of the gang barged into the house and overpowered Salam. Naushad and Rameez stayed outside. The gang thrashed the house owner till he died, said Special Prosecutor Rajan.

"Then they gagged Salam Haji and tied his hands and legs to make it look he is alive so that his wife and two children would not make noise and attract attention," he said. The gang was in the house for nearly 90 minutes, and during that time they constantly received direction from Naushad and Rameez, Rajan said. They also damaged the electronic surveillance and security system. But during the operation, Naushad made a call to the gang from a neighbour's landline phone, which helped the police put him under the suspects' list, the special prosecutor said.

On further analysis of their mobile phone records, the police picked up Mohsin, and later the entire gang. During the trial, 114 witnesses, including forensic experts of Pariyaram Medical College and nodal officers of Idea and Airtel telecom companies, were examined, said Rajan.

The District and Sessions Court here on Tuesday held seven persons guilty of the murder of Gulf-based businessman A.B. Abdul Salam Haji at Vellappu, near Thrikkaripur, on August 4 last year. The court acquitted one person for want of evidence.

P Rajan and M J Johnson appeared for the prosecution.

Mangaluru: A coordination meeting of BJP-JD(S) coalition was held to discuss the Lok Sabha elections in the Dakshina Kannada constituency on Monday.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said BJP and JD(S) have joined hands to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister again.

BJP district president Sathish Kumpala said though there were ideological differences, both parties have the same aim.

“Our main aim is the development of the district. If we join hands and work together, it will be made possible. Further, the coalition will help in controlling the corrupt Congress too,” he said.

JD(S) district president Madhava Gowda said the party has entered the coalition with BJP to defeat the corrupt Congress and make the Viksit Bharat concept a reality. The coalition with JD(S) will help BJP increase its margin in Dakshina Kannada, he added.

JD(S) leader MB Sadashiva said, according to party supremo HD Deve Gowda, the definition of the word ‘secular’ is an ‘inclusive’ move by taking everyone along together. The coalition will work together to strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.

BJP Mahila Morcha units in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have said the Congress in Karnataka is anti-women. Mahila Morcha president Manjula Rao said demeaning women is part of Congress culture.

Referring to Congress MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa’s sexist remarks, Rao said the remark of the veteran leader that ‘women should be limited to the kitchen’ has attracted the wrath of many people.

“Women are not limited to the kitchen. It was the BJP govt that ensured 33% reservation for women in the legislature. However, Congress has been denying opportunities for women,” she added.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Geethanjali Suvarna said in Udupi that voters in Karnataka will teach a lesson to the Congress in the LS election. “Minister Priyank Kharge has been attacking women through demeaning statements. The Congress govt follows an anti-women policy in the state. Women will reject Congress in the state,” said Suvarna.

Mysuru, Apr 13: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be visiting Mysuru on Sunday, is welcome in the state.

"Let him come and go. He is the PM. But he should tell people about what he has done to the people of Karnataka. Let him answer about the injustice done by the Union Government towards the state in terms of giving tax share, not releasing drought relief funds yet and also about the unemployment issue," he said.

The Chief Minister was speaking to media people near his residence at Sharadadevi Nagar in Mysuru on Saturday.

Reacting to a question on BJP's slogan, 'Teesri Baar Modi Sarkar, Ab Ki Baar Char Sau Paar' (Modi government for the third time with over 400 seats), CM Siddaramaiah said, "This slogan is only a strategy to divert the minds of people. Because, according to me, the NDA will not get an absolute majority/simple majority this time in the Parliament elections."

"I.N.D.I.A. bloc and the parties which are against BJP will get a majority in the Lok Sabha polls," he said.

Responding to the statement of BJP leaders that 'even if B R Ambedkar comes, the Indian Constitution cannot be changed', Siddaramaiah said, "BJP is always against the Indian Constitution. Savarkar and the second Chief of RSS M S Golwalkar both opposed the Indian Constitution written by Baba Saheb B R Ambedkar on January 26, 1950."

"When BJP MP Ananth Kumar Hegde spoke about changing the Indian Constitution twice, why wasn't he punished? Why wasn't he suspended from the party? Why didn't they drop him from the cabinet?"

"Hegde was not given a ticket for the LS polls, as he had not done any work in the five years and was only active for the last three-four months of his term. The reason Hegde was not given a ticket was because BJP had realised that he would lose the elections, and not because of his statement related to the Constitution" the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, regarding the nabbing of the two key suspects in the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, "I thank the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and also the Karnataka police for tracing and arresting the accused in the case, in Kolkata."

"They will be brought to Bengaluru and further information related to the case will be known after their interrogation," he said.
