Gowda lends support to agitation against land-grabbing

September 21, 2014

Bangalore, Sep 21: Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda has lent his support to the agitation launched by freedom fighter H S Doreswamy and JD(S) former MLA A T Ramaswamy against land-grabbing in the State.

H D Deve Gowda
Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Saturday, Gowda said he wanted to join the struggle embarked on by Doreswamy, but stayed away as his involvement would have given the issue a political colour.

œFor long, I have known that Doreswamy is a person who does not associate his struggles with political outfits. It would bring him a lot of pain if political colour is given to his struggle. However, I do believe that land-grabbing has to be stopped with the State government taking stringent action against those who are involved in it, he said.

Gowda said the government should, nonetheless, exercise caution when it comes to removing encroachments on revenue properties. œWhile on the one hand you have struggle to stop land-grabbing, on the other the government is issuing notices to evict people who have been making a living on half an acre or one acre of revenue land. The government needs to ensure that poor people cultivating on revenue land are not harmed. We lend our support to the government endeavour if it intends to remove encroachments by influential people of amruthmahal kavals, forest land and revenue land, he said.

Gowda said his decision to relocate to Hassan should not be misinterpreted as a bid to get re-elected in 2019 to the Lok Sabha. He said he was getting old and 2014's was his last election. œMy only reason of shifting to Hassan was to clear the debt I owed to the people of Hassan for keeping their faith in me for such a long time, he said.

Gowda said he will conduct public hearings two days in a week in Hassan and then tour the entire State by visiting all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies.

siddudupi.jpg

Udupi, Mar 13: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah today said that Congress in coastal region will further strengthen thanks to the entry of former chairman of Commission for Backward Classes Jayaprakash Hegde, and former MLA Sukumar Shetty.

He was responding to the queries of media persons after his arrival at the helipad in Udupi to take part in district-level convention of scheme beneficiaries.

“Hegde was in Congress and had served as MP. With Hegde returning back, the Congress will get more strength in the coastal districts,” he said.

On Hegde’s candidature for Udupi-Chikmagaluru Lok Sabha constituency, the CM said that the Congress high command will decide on the candidate.

On CAA

Siddaramaiah questioned why it took the Centre more than four years to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and termed the announcement as a political gimmick ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“Why were they silent all these years on implementing the CAA. With the fear of losing the upcoming Lok Sabha election, the BJP is engaged in all types of gimmick,” he said.

The Centre on Monday announced the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, a move that comes four years after the contentious law was passed. This paves the way for citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Siddaramaiah also said his government has not yet discussed the issue of implementation of the CAA in the State, and the Cabinet will take a call on it. “We are yet to read it. We will take a decision after going through it and discuss it in the cabinet tomorrow," CM said.
