Mangaluru, Feb 26: Minister for Women and Child Welfare Umashree called upon the people of Dakshina Kannada district to uphold communal harmony.
She said that India was a secular state, and if secularism was followed by people in its true sense, there would be no communal clashes or rioting in the country.
“Preserving the peace and harmony in the society is the real meaning of secularism,” she said.
The Congress leader went on to say that a certain political party is using the theory of using religion as the dividing factor with the intention of trying to gain political power by supporting the idea of a Hindu rashtra.
However, there is no question of taking away the freedom of people to follow their respective religion. There should be tolerance and co-existence among all communities, especially in Dakshina Kannada where people have a different mindset and thinking, she said.
