Mangaluru, Mar 1: Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan said that the police department had made tight security arrangements in the city and its surroundings areas to ensure that the Hindu Samajotsav scheduled to be held at Nehru Maidan on Sunday would be largely peaceful without any untoward incidents.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday morning, he said that a total of 14 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and 4 companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed, along with 4,000 police personnel in Dakshina Kannada as part of elaborate security arrangements.
The police authorities are doing their best to ensure that the security arrangements are foolproof with minimum amount of harm and damage in the district. The police department wants to ensure full security on all fronts, leaving no place uncovered, he said, requesting the citizens to cooperate with the police if they faced any inconvenience as part of security and traffic arrangements on Sunday.
He informed that a total of 200 video cameras and 360 CCTV cameras had been installed at major junctions and sensitive areas to keep an eye on the surroundings. The organisers have been informed to wind up the event by 5.30 p.m. at any cost. Likewise, the police are prepared to deal with any untoward incidents during or following the event, he said.
To a query, Mr Murugan said that several provocative banners put up by the organisers or well-wishers had been removed after complaints were brought forth by members of the society. The organisers were also asked to remove a few provocative ones to which they have cooperated well, he informed.
He also replied that although the entire event could have been banned from being held without providing a reason, the department had taken the decision to allow the event to be held in a communally-sensitive atmosphere since it was a democratic set-up.
