Mangaluru, Apr 19: Vision - 2015, an arts and craft exhibition by students of Saanidhya Residential School and Training Centre for Mentally Challenged, Mangaluru, was inaugurated as part of Saanidhya Utsav, organised by Shree Ganesha Seva Trust For Exceptional Persons at Kadri Park in the city on Saturday.
Speaking after inaugurating the exhibition, Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru City S Murugan said that institutions for differently-abled children should come up in all cities and create awareness on such children among people.
The general awareness about institutions for differently-abled is less since such institutions are fewer even in metropolitan cities. It is even lesser about those who are employed in such institutions, he said, appreciating the efforts of schools like Saanidhya towards mentally-challenged children.
He said that although most differently-abled children were capable enough, the world did not view them as capable persons. This is a wrong notion. No person is an incapable person as every individual is capable of different things, he told the gathering, appreciating the handicrafts made by the children.
Managing Trustee of Shree Somanatheshwara Temple, Permude P Bhujanga Shetty also spoke on the occasion and lauded the efforts of the school in training the differently-abled children.
Several handicrafts such as ornamental pieces depicting the Yakshagana headgear, colourful handmade flowers and painted vases, pen stands, fancy jewellery items, knitted table mats, painted greeting cards, framed paintings, soft toys and several other items made by the children studying in Saanidhya residential school were on display in the exhibition.
The jewellery items were fast-selling pieces while the flowers and brightly-coloured flower vases were eye-catchers among families and those who frequent the park for evening walks.
Administrator of Saanidhya Residential School Vasanth Kumar Shetty welcomed the gathering. President of Shree Ganesha Seva Trust Mahabala Marla proposed a vote of thanks.
