Bantwal, Apr 20: Uncovering a network of interstate vehicle and arecanut thieves, a team of Bantwal police and Dakshina Kannada crime detection unit has arrested five accused and seized five cars and a motorbike along with 20 gunny bags of stolen arecanut from them.
The arrested have been identified as Imran from Mangilapadavu in Vittal, Mohammed Muksin from Nandavara, Akhtar, a resident of Perne, Shifan from Uppinangady and Umar Farooq from Kannagar in Padubidri.
During investigation, it was learnt that the five accused had been involved in various crimes and thefts in the limits of Uppinangady, Manipal, Bantwal town, Mangaluru rural, Vittal and Belthangady police stations as well as in Kerala.
When the team of police officials had been conducting their operations at Salethoor in Vittal police station limits, they found the five accused transporting stolen arecanut in six gunny bags in a Maruti Ritz and Maruti Swift car. After taking the accused into custody, it came to light during preliminary investigation that they accusd had been involved in several interstate thefts.
The accused are believed to have been involved in thefts of areca worth lakhs of rupees in Budoli in Vittal station limits, Ira and Vogga in Bantwal rural station limits, and Jarigebail in Belthangady station limits. They have also robbed a Maruti 800 and Maruti Omni in Bantwal town limits, and a motorbike in Uppinangady station limits. The total value of the areca and vehicles seized from the accused is worth Rs 16 lakhs.
The police informed that some of the accused had also been involved in a robbery in Manipal, an assault case in Vittal, a ganja trading case in Uppinangady and a kidnapping case in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The police suspect that few more accused are a part of the interstate gang of thieves and investigation has been intensified to identify and arrested all members of the gang, informed Bantwal circle inspector Belliappa.
District Superintendent of Police Dr S D Sharanappa praised the efforts of the team in exposing the network of interstate thieves and announced a reward for all the police officials who were part of the team.
