Mangaluru, May 22: The victims of the 2010 Mangaluru air crash were today remembered on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the aviation disaster with officials and elected representatives paying homage.
One of the country's worst aviation disasters, Air India Express flight 812 coming here from Dubai overshot the runway and crashed while landing at the international airport in the early hours of May 22, 2010 killing 158 passengers.
At a memorial function held at the crash site by the District Administration, a one minute silence was observed. District Minister in-charge Ramanath Rai, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim, DK MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Airport Director J T Radhakrishna among others offered floral tributes at the spot.
In his speech Rai extended his sympathies to the families of the victims and said that no Mangalurean could erase the tragedy from memory.
Mr Ibrahim said the work on the construction of a memorial park for the victims of the crash will commence in a few days near the Kulur bridge leading to Tannirbavi.
The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) and Mangalore International Airport have also joined hands in this project, he said.
