Mangaluru, Jul 31: A letter written by former president of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam soon after his assumption of office in 2002, to a Class 7 student became a source of inspiration to the girl, encouraging her to pursue her dreams and fulfill her aspiration of becoming a doctor.
The letter sent from the Rashtrapati Bhavan read - "Dear friend Alaka, May I thank you for your kind sentiments and good wishes expressed on my assumption of office. With best wishes. Yours sincerely, A P J Abdul Kalam".
It had been signed personally by Dr Kalam. Overjoyed and inspired by the letter she received, Alaka followed her dreams as went on to become a doctor.
She is the daughter of Subbraya Bhat and Ganga Prasanna from Panja village near Sullia town on the outskirts of Mangaluru. Having completed her MBBS degree at A J Institute of Medical Sciences in Mangaluru, Dr Alaka is now pursuing her MD degree in General Medicine and wishes to serve people in the rural areas.
Dr Alaka KS told Coastaldigest.com that the reply to a common letter she had sent as a student of Class 7 to the then-president of India had been an inspiration to her life. "Like me, Dr Kalam inspired several young students to aspire and work towards the welfare of the country," she said.
In 2002, Alaka had been studying in Knanaya Jyothi English Medium School in Kadaba. She was inspired by the words of Dr Kalam who, as the President of India, encouraged students to dream and aspire to become successful individuals.
She then expressed her appreciation and best wishes in a letter addressed to Dr Kalam. Not expecting a reply, she had forgotten about her letter.
After a few weeks, she received a reply at her school from the President himself. The entire school was informed of this letter at the school assembly in the morning. According to Alaka, this letter was the highlight of her entire student life. Encouraged by the response from Dr Kalam, she set out to realise her dream of becoming a doctor.
