Udupi, Aug 1: Over 25 people from Udupi and Vijayapura districts have fallen prey to a hoax advertisement that was published in a Kannada newspaper on job vacancies in the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

fraud
According to sources, about 20 job aspirants from Udupi district and seven from Vijayapura district fell prey to the hoax advertisement and were cheated by individuals who originally posted the advertisement in the newspaper.

The advertisement in the newspaper announces job vacancies in the forest department and lists two STD mobile numbers for contact along with the e-mail ID – [email protected]

It is learnt that the fraudsters operated from a fake address in Noida in Uttar Pradesh. When contacted on the published mobile numbers, a person going by the name Gautham Kumar would speak to the caller and instruct him to deposit an initial sum of Rs 2,000 to a bank account in State Bank of India (SBI) belonging to Somanath Mohinta with the A/c number - 34676240066, to obtain the registration form for the job vacancy.

Fake job offer letters, insurance policy

On receiving the deposit of cash, a fake registration form with the masthead bearing the Ministry of Environment and Forests logo was sent through email service. After filling and submitting the form online, a fake job offer letter was sent directly to the residential address of the applicant!

Unwittingly, the applicant would deposit a sum of Rs 19,500 to the same bank account as instructed by the fraudsters – as charges for the alleged requisite training and equipment such as laptop and mobile phone.

As soon as this amount was deposited by the applicant, there would be a request for deposit of a further sum of Rs 20,500 for a fake life insurance policy. After this, there would a further request to deposit another sum of Rs 60,000.

In this manner, several gullible job applicants were duped of their money until they stopped depositing additional amounts of money. While some victims began to grow suspicious about the requests for cash deposits, some others even deposited the amount of Rs 60,000 as requested.

However, there was no further correspondence with the fraudsters. Only when the victims approached and enquired with the local forest department officials, they were informed that there was no such recruitment process initiated either by the state or central government as originally advertised in the newspaper.

Officials from the forest department in Udupi and Vijayapura districts said that they had been approached by several youth enquiring of such a recruitment process. A youth from Udupi finally lodged a complaint at Kundapur police station alleging that he had been duped by fraudsters. The police have registered a case in this regard.

An Indian expatriate, hailing from Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, who was detained in Jeddah jail in an alleged cyber case, was set free recently. He is allowed to continue his work in the same company.

The 49-year-old Mangalurean, has been working for a Maintenance company in Jeddah for more than 13 years. He is known for his efficiency and sincerity in the company with good experience in his field of work.

His company usually assigned him on duty in Jeddah sea port to take the delivery of the goods consigned to his company. As a part of his duty, he normally takes pictures of the goods before the transportation. He did the same in February 2023 too.

The security personnel informed the police about his act that amounts to be a violation of the port security rule. He was unaware of the rule as he was doing it normally in the port during the release of the goods. Since then, he was detained by the police on the charge of photographing inside the port premises. After more than 6 months detention, he was released and allowed to work in the same company.

The detainee’s brother based in Jeddah was constantly pursuing the case.

P A Hameed Padubidri, a pro-bono NRI lawyer and social worker based in Riyadh, extended his socio-humanitarian help in this case upon the request of his family and relatives.

He actively involved trying to set him free from the jail on humanitarian grounds with the coordination and help of the Consulate General of India (CGI) Jeddah. The CGI keenly followed up the case with the concerned Saudi authorities. He was released from the jail recently and shared his happiness with his family and thanked good samaritans.

Hassan: Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda has announced that his son, former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will contest from state's Mandya parliamentary seat as NDA candidate.

Deve Gowda told reporters on Tuesday that the decision to field Kumaraswamy, who is also JD(S) state president, in Lok Sabha polls from the Mandya seat was taken amid mounting public demand. "People are demanding that Kumaraswamy should contest from Mandya. In the core committee meeting as well, all members suggested that he should contest from Mandya," Deve Gowda said.

The former Chief Minister's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy had lost to independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh from Mandya in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The JD(S) supremo further said that the name of senior leader Mallesh Babu has been finalised from the Kolar seat.

Deve Gowda's grandson and former Karnataka Minister H. D. Revanna's son sitting JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna will be contesting as the NDA candidate from the Hassan seat.

Earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy in a media briefing indicated that he would contest from Mandya amid mounting public pressure on him.

Congress has fielded Venkatarame Gowda popularly known as ‘Star Chandru’ from the Mandya seat dominated by Vokkaligas. Star Chandru is a close associate of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Bengaluru, Mar 22: An FIR has been registered against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya over a provocative hate post on social media, Election Commission officials said on Friday.

The move comes after a complaint filed by officials of the poll body and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) that the Bengaluru South MP, who is also the President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, had in a post apparently targeted a minority and spread enmity between two communities.

He also made a similar post on March 19 on X and YouTube which went viral. He has 1.3 million followers on X, thereby influencing the voters and disturbing the communal harmony between the communities, it further alleged.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Halasuru Gate police station on March 20 under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 295 A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act, the officials said.
