Mangaluru, Nov 25: The photo of a woman Home Guard constable filling a pothole on the very busy Mangaluru-Udupi national highway at Baikampady recently has gone viral on WhatsApp and other social networking sites.
Within a couple of days after her noble deed was captured on mobile phone by a passerby, the 21-year-old constable Padmavathi Kulal became a role model for Mangalureans!
Ms Kulal, who had been recently posted at Baikampady junction on the outskirts of the city for a week, had repeatedly requested the authorities concerned to close a dangerous pothole which had been causing inconvenience to motorists on the highway. But her pleas fell on deaf ears.
On Saturday, the sixth and last day of her duty at the Baikampady junction, the constable noticed a truck carrying a load of gravel with asphalt passing through the road. She stopped the truck and requested the truck driver to unload a bit of mixture on the road. Ms Kulal then proceeded to fill the pothole herself.
After the photos of Ms Kulal closing the pothole went viral, she was felicitated by an organisation in the presence of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Uday Nayak on Tuesday.
