Mangaluru, Nov 29: Ramakrishna Mission carried out 28th Swachh Mangaluru abhiyan in Kankanady area on Sunday. Mohan Shinge, coordinator, department of social work, Mangalore University and Prashanth Uparangala, manager, HDFC Bank, and well-wisher of the mission fagged off the drive in the presence of Swami Jitakamanandaji, president, Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru. Dr Sathish Rao, Umanath Kotekar, Vittaldas Prabhu, and other eminent persons were present.
About 100 volunteers, members of Hindu Warriors Whatsapp Group, students of department of social work from Mangalore University, members of Chintana group of MRPL, devotees and well-wishers of the Mission participated in the campaign. Volunteers cleaned area surrounding Kankanady flower market, Kankanady circle, area in front of bus-stand and Father Mullers' Hospital. Volunteers led by Mhd Arif Padubidri cleaned Kankanady market area.
Using earth excavating machine, heaps of stones, sand and other construction debris were cleared thus levelling the road. The flower market in Kankanady building was worn out and had not seen paint for years together. Volunteers from Hindu Warriors WhatsApp group cleaned the tiles, cleared the roof off weeds and moss that had grown there and painted the tiles on the roof and the building thus giving it a new face lift much to the delight of the regular visitors.
The rusted railings adjoining Kankanady bus stop was cleaned and painted giving a new look to this public utility. Volunteers cleared the knee-high grass and weeds on road dividers and road corners using grass cutting machine. Compound walls were beautified by removing posters and foot paths were cleared off the mud and dirt accumulated. Worn out way board on Kalpana Road in Kankanady was repainted and rewritten thus benefitting the pedestrians.
