Kasaragod, May 3: With just two weeks to go for the election, the leaders of the national parties are turning their attention to Kerala with the promise of taking the political debate to newer directions.

The campaign for the assembly election in Kerala was so far dominated by the war of words between Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

Congress leader and former defence minister A K Antony has already started his campaign in Kerala by stating that the aim of United Democratic Front (UDF) is to ensure a BJP-free assembly. He said that there is a close fight going on between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and UDF.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will reach Kerala on May 9 while Rahul Gandhi will be in the state on May 11 to 12. Other leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sachin Pilot are expected to visit Kerala to campaign for UDF.

An array of national leaders of BJP led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to reach Kerala to lead the campaign of the state unit.

BJP president Amit Shah's programme in Kerala is from May 1 to 14. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach Kerala on May 6. He will address 5 rallies from May 6 to 11. For the first time the PM will address a massive crowd in Kasaragod on May 8 at 9:30 a.m.

Nine other ministers including Union home Minister Rajnath Singh are expected to land in the state for campaigning for BJP. CPI(M) leaders like Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury have started campaigning for LDF in Kerala. Their main task would be to defend the party's strategy in West Bengal to team up with Congress.

BJP state president Kummanam Rajashekharan said that A K Antony's statement that BJP will not open its account in Kerala is his "day dream". He added that state saw the worst communal riot when A K Antony was the Chief Minister.

V S Achuthanandan said that Antony should tell this to his disciple Oommen Chandy, indirectly suggesting that Oommen Chandy has made a deal with BJP. The VS-Chandy war of words started with the speech that VS Achuthanandan made at Darmadam in which he said that there were 31 cases pending against Chandy and 136 cases against he and his cabinet colleagues.

Oommen Chandy retorted by stating that it is a lie and filed a defamation suit against V S Achuthanandan. He also made a complaint against him to the EC. He said if Achuthanandan is making such statements the people will see to it that he is keeping quiet.

Achuthanandan replied that Chandy is asking people to revolt and said that he will furnish all the details of the cases to the Court.

Bengaluru, Apr 12: The two men who allegedly plotted and executed the blast that rocked Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru last month have been arrested from Kanthi in Bengal's East Midnapore district, the National Investigation Agency said Friday morning.

Mussavir Hussain Shazeb and Abdul Matheen Taha were caught after a joint operation by central intelligence agencies and police from Bengal, Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala, and are en route to Kolkata, the anti-terror agency said in a statement.

The available evidence indicates Shazeb planted the explosive device, placed inside a backpack, at the popular eatery. Taha was responsible for planning the attack and for their disappearance.

These are the second and third arrests in this case; last month Muzammil Shareef, who extended logistical support to the Shazeb and Taha, was taken into custody.

Residents of Karnataka's Shivamogga district, Shazeb and Taha were traced to Kanthi after officials conducted searches at 18 locations across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and even Uttar Pradesh.

The blast at Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe on March 1 injured 10 people, customers and staff.

Fortunately there were no deaths; the bag containing the explosives was placed in a relatively less crowded area and against a large pillar that absorbed the brunt of the explosion.

After the blast, the NIA released photos and videos of the accused, as seen on CCTV cameras across Bengaluru. In one such clip, the accused - wearing a face mask - was seen boarding a bus.

The agency had declared a reward of ₹ 10 lakh for information leading to the arrest of each accused. The agency had also questioned their acquaintances, including college and school friends.

The Rameshwaram Cafe, which suffered extensive damage after the blast, reopened eight days later, with enhanced security measures including metal detectors.

BJP’s reaction

The Karnataka BJP on Friday attacked the Siddaramaiah government after the arrest of two men by the NIA in the Bengaluru cafe blast case, saying that the terrorists were 'brothers' of the Congress.

Taking to social media, Karnataka BJP stated, “National Investigation Agency (NIA) detains ‘Brothers’ of Congress in Rameshwaram Blast case. Ever since Jihadi Tipu Sultan’s admirers came to power in Karnataka, terrorists have got a free ride.”

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s ‘Ease of Doing Terror’ Policies have prompted ISIS to now set up its shop in Karnataka. The only guarantee that CM Siddaramaiah has fulfilled is converting prosperous Karnataka into a terror hub,” the BJP stated.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former union minister C M Ibrahim, who was expelled from Janata Dal (Secular) for protesting against party’s alliance with BJP, has stressed on need for a third front not just at the national level, but also in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, he said he’s planning to form a third front in Karnataka along with Lingayat Seer Dingaleshwar Swami.

Ibrahim said that he will tour the state between April 27 and May 4 and that he would meet Dingaleshwar Swami on April 29. “There is a need for the third front in this country. We will try to establish a third front in association with the seer and we hope we will be successful in those efforts,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with the Congress for not doing enough to gain the full confidence of Muslims, Ibrahim said that Congress is concentrating only on certain communities for votes, and ignoring Muslims.

“The Congress is not even caring for Muslims and Dalit votes. In some Muslim areas they did not even hold campaigns seeking votes and trying to convince the communities which never vote in their favour. I fear this may lead to low turnout and Congress may lose its vote base,” he opined.

Mentioning about guarantees on which Congress is strongly relying during this election, Ibrahim said, such things won’t work all the time. “Guarantees will not work anymore. Every election you need to give something new to the voters,” he added.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that Congress is trying to appease minorities for votes, Ibrahim requested both Congress and BJP parties not bring Muslims between them. “I request both parties. Leave us alone. Don’t make us sandwiches for your political sake. We are living with peace and hope even the Prime Minister will understand this,” Ibrahim added.

Launching a broadside against Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Ibrahim said, “Deve Gowda has sold his personality itself. Whatever I have told about JD(S) has come true. I pity, a former Prime Minister should not have come to this stage,” he said.
