Mangaluru, Jun 30: The Mangaluru City Corporation, which is gearing up for a complete ban on all plastic material has launched a drive to distribute one lakh cloth bags to residents, to effectively convey the message.
These plastic bags bear the message - 'I Love Mangaluru City More than Plastics', and also a slogan 'Namma Mangaluru - Swachh Mangaluru'.
Mayor Harinath who symbolically launched drive at the monthly general meeting of the corporation council by handing over the first bag to Deputy Mayor Sumithra Kariya, said that the state government on March 11 this year passed an order banning various types of plastics.
"In a bid to send across the message to the masses that they cannot use plastic any more, MCC in the first phase will distribute 15,000 cloth bags to students of four schools in the city," he said, adding that the civic body has invited tenders for procuring and distributing 1 lakh such bags.
Clarifying that the total clamp down on plastic will come into effect from July 1, the mayor said the main aim behind providing the bags to schoolchildren is that they can convey the message back home. "The change has to come from within," Harinath said adding that MCC will supply the remaining cloth bags to other schools in a phased manner.
The civic body will also initiate strict action against establishments that dispense items to customers in plastic carry bags, he warned.

Dear sir,
in this move there is no big acchivement and it will not stand because nowadays without plastic nothing will work only thing you have to clean the city not to cancel the plastic you can spend money to clean the city and not to manufacture or buy cloth bags and distribute.
