Mangaluru, Aug 29: Accusing the police of arresting an innocent in connection with rowdy-sheeter Charan murder case, a group of Muslims staged a dharna on Sunday near a mosque in Moodushedde Edurupadavu, on the outskirts of the city, and demanded his immediate release.
Charan was hacked to death in front of his wife and child on August 19 by a gang of four miscreants near Vamanjoor when the family was travelling in an auto-rickshaw. Soon after the incident M Chandra Sekhar, city police commissioner formed three teams that took some suspects to custody for interrogation.
On Saturday the police arrested Saifulla, a resident of Moodushedde Edurupadavu in connection with the same case. This enraged the local residents who believe that Saifulla is innocent. A few members of Popular Front of India were also part of the protest.
The agitators, who gathered near the mosque, insisted that DCP Shantharaju should come and accept the petition otherwise they would gherao the Mangaluru rural police station.
Finally, Mr Shantharaju visited the protest spot and accepted the petition. He assured them that if police found Saifulla innocent, then he would be released.
Meanwhile, police had tightened security near Mangaluru rural police station. A team of police led by ACP Udaya Naik was checking vehicles coming from Vamanjoor side. Kadri police inspector Maruti Nayak, Pandeshwar inspector Belliappa, Bunder police inspector Shantharam, rural police inspector Sharif, inspector Bharathi and KSRP police were also seen at the site.
