Udupi, Dec 4: Five youths were arrested on the charge of assaulting two KSRTC drivers and a conductor at Padubidri in Udupi on Saturday. However, they were later released on conditional bail.
The group did not allow the bus to overtake, but finally, the bus driver managed to go ahead. The angry youths stopped the bus near Bhavya Petrol Bunk at Padubidri at around 4.45 a.m. and allegedly abused the driver, Girish Kumar.
When the conductor, Nagaraj Shetty, and substitute driver, Jatappa Naik, tried to intervene, the youths beat them up too. In the melee, the conductor lost Rs. 8,140.
The police managed to arrest five — Nehal, Kaushik, Joviyal, Hitesh, and Chintan, while Saurav, Akash, Dhanush, and Aditya are absconding.
Kaup Circle Police Inspector V.S. Halmurthy Rao said on Sunday that the arrested were subjected to medical examination and produced before court on Saturday, which released them on conditional bail. They have have to appear before court on Monday. All nine are engineering students, he said.
A case had been registered and investigations are on, the police said.
