Chennai, Dec 8: The two most politically busiest and crowded places in Tamil Nadu — Vedha Nilayam, the Poes Garden residence of late J Jayalalithaa, and the AIADMK headquarters in Royapettah — wore a deserted look on Wednesday, a day after the former chief minister was laid to rest at Marina Beach here. Both the areas had always been a security fortress with the presence of heavily armed policemen and frisking checkposts.

Even the Apollo Hospitals, where 68-year-old Jayalalithaa had been undergoing treatment for 75 days, was also abandoned by AIADMK cadres and security personnel, who were stationed outside the premises for more than two months.

Apollo sources said the personnel who were guarding the roads leading to the hospital had left the premises on Tuesday morning itself. In addition, several hundred barricades that were placed outside the hospital have been removed.

“There will be some or the other meeting in our party office. However, after Amma's demise no one is willing to visit the office as the memory of Amma will taunt us,” said AIADMK worker Krishnaraj, who had come to pick up his luggage from the party office and head back home after attending the last rites.

Even tea shops and snacks stalls were forced to close down on Wednesday afternoon as they did not have any business. “There is no point in keeping the shop open when there are no sales,” a shopkeeper said.

Meanwhile, the public, who were always subjected to a series of security checks near Jayalalithaa's residence, moved about freely. Not a single AIADMK cadre was present near the locality, which used to be thronged by party workers. “For the first time in several years, there is not much activity here at Poes Garden,” Muthu Krishnan, a resident of the area, said.

77 die of shock

More than 70 people in various parts of the state reportedly died of shock after hearing about Jayalalithaa's demise. In a statement, the AIADMK claimed that “77 functionaries died due to deep sorrow and shock after their party chief died on December 5 in Chennai”.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: Former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor at his residence in Bengaluru last month.

Yediyurappa, 81, was booked after a woman lodged a complaint saying that she visited his residence on February 2 seeking justice in a rape case against her daughter and sought that a special investigation team (SIT) be formed to look into the case.

According to the first information report (FIR), Yediyurappa allegedly took the minor to a room, closed the door and sexually assaulted her. The woman further alleged in the FIR that when she confronted Yediyurappa, he said that he was checking if the girl was raped or not. Yediyurappa later allegedly apologised and asked the woman not to reveal the matter to anyone.

The Sadashivanagar police in Bengaluru have registered a case under Section 8 (commit sexual assault) of the Pocso Act and Section 354 (a) (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Reacting to the allegations, the former CM said that around one-and-a-half months ago, they (the victim and her mother) had come to his house seeking help and he had taken them inside.

“After listening to her, I called the city police commissioner B Dayananda over phone seeking to address her problem. Later, they spoke against me and I then suspected that there is some health problem with her. I sent them to city police commissioner’s office. I even gave her some money as they were in distress. I came to know that an FIR has been registered and will look into it. But this is what I get for helping someone,” he added.

Hassan: Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda has announced that his son, former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will contest from state's Mandya parliamentary seat as NDA candidate.

Deve Gowda told reporters on Tuesday that the decision to field Kumaraswamy, who is also JD(S) state president, in Lok Sabha polls from the Mandya seat was taken amid mounting public demand. "People are demanding that Kumaraswamy should contest from Mandya. In the core committee meeting as well, all members suggested that he should contest from Mandya," Deve Gowda said.

The former Chief Minister's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy had lost to independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh from Mandya in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The JD(S) supremo further said that the name of senior leader Mallesh Babu has been finalised from the Kolar seat.

Deve Gowda's grandson and former Karnataka Minister H. D. Revanna's son sitting JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna will be contesting as the NDA candidate from the Hassan seat.

Earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy in a media briefing indicated that he would contest from Mandya amid mounting public pressure on him.

Congress has fielded Venkatarame Gowda popularly known as ‘Star Chandru’ from the Mandya seat dominated by Vokkaligas. Star Chandru is a close associate of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Bengaluru, Mar 22: An FIR has been registered against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya over a provocative hate post on social media, Election Commission officials said on Friday.

The move comes after a complaint filed by officials of the poll body and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) that the Bengaluru South MP, who is also the President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, had in a post apparently targeted a minority and spread enmity between two communities.

He also made a similar post on March 19 on X and YouTube which went viral. He has 1.3 million followers on X, thereby influencing the voters and disturbing the communal harmony between the communities, it further alleged.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Halasuru Gate police station on March 20 under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 295 A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act, the officials said.
