Work on Yettinahole project progressing without hindrance

January 12, 2017

Bengaluru, Jan 12: Despite the state government facing stiff opposition from various quarters to execute the multi-crore Yettinahole project, the work has not stopped on ground zero. Also, the government has no intention of stalling the work.

Yettinahole
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had convened a meeting on December 27, 2016 to discuss the Yettinahole project, which aims at bringing water from Sakaleshpur in Hassan district to various districts such as Kolar, Chikkaballapur and parts of Benglauru Rural.

At the meeting, elected representatives from the BJP?and activists from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts had strongly opposed diversion of the Netravati river water. On last Wednesday, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and RSS leaders had announced that the diversion of water from the Yettinahole, which feeds water to the Netravati river, would not be allowed.

Officers who are monitoring the Yettinahole civil work on a daily basis in the villages of Sakaleshpur taluk on Wednesday told DH that there is no instruction from the government or court to stop the work. Except felling of trees in the forest areas, the rest of the scheduled works are on.

Four officials from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) visited the Yettinahole project sites on January 4 and 5. The officials visited the project site on the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) as certain individuals and an NGO have moved the Supreme Court against the project. The objections raised include large-scale tree felling and illegalities in the execution of the work. The MoEF is scheduled to submit its report to the NGT on January 16.

The state government officials have claimed that the construction of weirs (low dams) that form the lift component of Stage I has been going on. About 60% of the work has been completed by constructing six of the eight weirs.

As the project is mainly for providing drinking water, there is no need to obtain environment clearance for the project. The MoEF has cleared the project and power supply has been sanctioned by the KPTCL. The government has opted for both, direct purchase of land from farmers and parting with its own land for the project. The total land required for Phase I is about 257 hectares. The forest land required is 13.93 hectares, the government land 33 hectares and the remaining is private land. For Phase II, 4,913.13 hectares would be required.

The total cost of the project, as estimated in 2012-13, was Rs 12,913 crore. So far the government has sanctioned Rs 1,800 crore. The project aims at lifting and distributing 24 tmcft of water and of these, 15 tmcft would be for drinking purpose.

Sources said permission has been taken for chopping 11,000 trees. Of these, 6,000 are in the forests. So far, nearly 2,500 trees have been axed in the forests. For now, clearing of trees has been stopped in view of the NGT hearing. But, the work on the lift irrigation component is on.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

Azeez was, who had gone to the resort along with his parents, was playing in the pool when he lost balance and drowned. Even though he was rescued, he was in a critical condition and later breathed his last.

The family members have accused the negligence of the resort management as the reason for Azeez's death. They said that the incident occurred due to the absence of safety equipment like life jackets and the lack of lifeguards near the swimming pool.

Bengaluru, Apr 12: The two men who allegedly plotted and executed the blast that rocked Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru last month have been arrested from Kanthi in Bengal's East Midnapore district, the National Investigation Agency said Friday morning.

Mussavir Hussain Shazeb and Abdul Matheen Taha were caught after a joint operation by central intelligence agencies and police from Bengal, Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala, and are en route to Kolkata, the anti-terror agency said in a statement.

The available evidence indicates Shazeb planted the explosive device, placed inside a backpack, at the popular eatery. Taha was responsible for planning the attack and for their disappearance.

These are the second and third arrests in this case; last month Muzammil Shareef, who extended logistical support to the Shazeb and Taha, was taken into custody.

Residents of Karnataka's Shivamogga district, Shazeb and Taha were traced to Kanthi after officials conducted searches at 18 locations across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and even Uttar Pradesh.

The blast at Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe on March 1 injured 10 people, customers and staff.

Fortunately there were no deaths; the bag containing the explosives was placed in a relatively less crowded area and against a large pillar that absorbed the brunt of the explosion.

After the blast, the NIA released photos and videos of the accused, as seen on CCTV cameras across Bengaluru. In one such clip, the accused - wearing a face mask - was seen boarding a bus.

The agency had declared a reward of ₹ 10 lakh for information leading to the arrest of each accused. The agency had also questioned their acquaintances, including college and school friends.

The Rameshwaram Cafe, which suffered extensive damage after the blast, reopened eight days later, with enhanced security measures including metal detectors.

BJP’s reaction

The Karnataka BJP on Friday attacked the Siddaramaiah government after the arrest of two men by the NIA in the Bengaluru cafe blast case, saying that the terrorists were 'brothers' of the Congress.

Taking to social media, Karnataka BJP stated, “National Investigation Agency (NIA) detains ‘Brothers’ of Congress in Rameshwaram Blast case. Ever since Jihadi Tipu Sultan’s admirers came to power in Karnataka, terrorists have got a free ride.”

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s ‘Ease of Doing Terror’ Policies have prompted ISIS to now set up its shop in Karnataka. The only guarantee that CM Siddaramaiah has fulfilled is converting prosperous Karnataka into a terror hub,” the BJP stated.
