Tamil Nadu: Cars ferrying TN MLAs attacked near central jail

February 16, 2017

Bengaluru: Feb 16: Tension prevailed outside the barricaded area of Central?Prisons at Parappana Agrahara when people, claiming to be supporters of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa, attacked vehicles carrying MLAs from Tamil Nadu.

attack

Protesters who had gathered along the roadside leading to the central prisons hurled abuses at Sasikala accusing her of killing Jayalalithaa.

After Sasikala’s convoy went past the double road, the mob pelted the government vehicles ferrying MLAs, with stones and slippers. Some protesters smashed the windshields of at least five cars and hurled abuses at MLAs.

They objected to MLAs using government vehicles to travel from Chennai to Bengaluru. Some protesters abused MLAs for supporting Sasikala. One of the AIADMK leaders tried to pacify the crowd by saying they were just following orders of the party senior leaders. However, the mob continued to attack the vehicles with stones and helmets.

When the situation turned violent, the police resorted to caning to disperse the crowd. The agitating mob accused the AIADMK leaders of misleading the people of Tamil Nadu.

A senior police official said the identity of the protesters could not be established. “They could be frenzied mobs including some local Tamil-speaking people. The situation was tense only for about 15 minutes as the crowd was dispersed,” he said.

The city police had made elaborate security arrangements for the smooth passage of Sasikala's convoy. Traffic police were deployed from the Naganathapura junction, the entry point of Bengaluru city police jurisdiction. The police stopped movement of vehicles to ensure hassle-free movement of around 15 vehicles that had accompanied Sasikala’s car.

Sasikala, who sat next to the driver like her mentor J Jayalalithaa used to, waved to people on her way to the prison. The vehicle (registration TN09BE5969), a few AIADMK leaders said, was the one used by Jayalalithaa. Her supporters shouted slogans “Chinnamma valga” (long live Chinnamma). Media vehicles were stopped at the junction leading to the central prisons. However, a crew of Jaya TV went along with Sasikala's convoy.

Local people around Parappana Agrahara had gathered to get a glimpse of the convict. Sasikala’s husband V N Natarajan had arrived at the court half an hour before she arrived and left soon after she was sent into the prison.

State to seek costs

Law Minister T B Jayachandra said the state government will soon write to chief secretary of Tamil Nadu to reimburse the expense incurred for conducting the trial of former Tamil Nadu chief minister late Jayalalithaaa, V?K Sasikala and others in the disproportionate assets case in Bengaluru. “The total cost may run up to several crores,”he said.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Azeez, a Class 4 student at Darussalam English Medium School in Hoode.

Azeez was, who had gone to the resort along with his parents, was playing in the pool when he lost balance and drowned. Even though he was rescued, he was in a critical condition and later breathed his last.

The family members have accused the negligence of the resort management as the reason for Azeez's death. They said that the incident occurred due to the absence of safety equipment like life jackets and the lack of lifeguards near the swimming pool.

A case has been registered at Shankaranarayana police station and investigations are underway.

Hubballi, Apr 23: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday spoke to father of slain student Neha Hiremath over phone and said "sorry" over his daughter's killing, and assured that "we will be on your side".

The Chief Minister also informed Niranjan Hiremath, who is also a Congress councillor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, about the government's decision to hand over the murder case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and setting up a special court to fast-track trial.

"Niranjan... very sorry. We will be on your side," Siddaramaiah told Hiremath over the phone call during state's Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil's visit to Hiremath's house here.

In the conversation on Patil's phone with speakers on, Siddaramaiah can be heard informing Hiremath about the CID probe and setting up a special court.

"It is a serious offence... setting up a special court will ensure punishment for the accused person."

Hiremath thanked Siddaramaiah on behalf of his family well-wishers and the community for handing over the case to CID and setting up a special court "...ensure there is an order at the earliest and provide us justice," he said, as he also thanked Patil, Home Minister G Parameshwara, local Congress MLA Prasad Abbayya and others for their support.

Replying to this, Siddaramaiah said, "We will ensure it, at the earliest."

In a shocking incident, Neha Hiremath (23), was stabbed to death on the campus of BVB College last Thursday. The accused Fayaz Khondunaik, who fled from the scene, was arrested by the police subsequently.

Neha was a first year Master of Computer Application (MCA) student and Fayaz was earlier her classmate.

Siddaramaih on Monday had announced his government has decided to hand over the investigation into the incident to the Crime Investigation Department, and to set up a special court for speedy disposal of the case.

The case of brutal murder, which sparked widespread outrage, has snowballed into a political slugfest between ruling Congress and opposition BJP.

While the ruling party has tried to project it as an incident with personal angle, the saffron party has called it a "love jihad" case and has said it's a testimony of deterioration of law and order in the state.

Earlier, Siddarmaiah's statement that the murder was due to "personal reasons" and Home Minister G Parameshwara's comments that the duo was in love, has elicited sharp reactions from Hiremath and family members and opposition parties.

BJP MLA Arabail Shivaram Hebbar’s son Vivek Hebbar on Thursday, 11 April, joined the Congress party along with his supporters at Banavasi in Uttara Kannada district.

After quitting the BJP, Vivek Hebbar joined the party in the presence of state Congress vice president and former MLC Ivan D’Souza and other local party leaders.

Speculations have been rife about his father Shivaram Hebbar, an MLA from the Yellapur Assembly segment, also planning to join the Congress, ever since he did not turn up for voting during the polls to four seats of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka held on 27 February.

The senior Hebbar’s absence from voting, despite a party whip, had caused embarrassment to the BJP. He had, however, later attributed his absence to poor health.

The BJP had also issued notice to him, which he responded to.

Shivaram Hebbar had recently met Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar but claimed that the meeting was about water issues in his Assembly segment.

The senior BJP leader was earlier with the Congress. He was among 17 Congress-JD(S) legislators, who had quit from their parties, which ultimately led to the collapse of the then HD Kumaraswamy-led coalition government in July 2019.

Shivaram Hebbar had subsequently won the by-poll on a BJP ticket and served as a minister in the then government of the saffron party.
