Mandya, Mar 21: A Muslim girl from Mandya wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to help her get an education loan. The Prime Minister’s office wasted no time in responding to the letter and the girl received Rs 1.5 lakh loan to further her learning.
But the bank rejected her application citing a mandate that forbade them to grant any loans until the previous ones had been repaid.
She then decided to write to the Prime Minister and invoked his 'Beti bachao, beti padhao' initiative, asking if he would be willing to help a daughter who wants to study.
Within ten days, PM Modi's letter answering Sara's request arrived and she was granted a loan by Vijaya Bank for her studies the same day.
Kshema Kumar, senior manager at Vijaya Bank's Mandya branch said, "Bibi Sara's father came to us with the PMO letter. We checked their background and saw they were eligible for the education loan. So we sanctioned it."
Sara and her father feel very fortunate at this happy turn of events.
"Out of such a huge population, Modi ji replied to me. I am very happy. He is a great leader," Sara enthused.
Defending the bank's decision not to sanction a loan to Sara, Chandregowda, branch manager at Central Bank of India said, "This is the season of recovering education and other loans, so we have been instructed by higher-ups not to sanction any loan for the time being. So we could not sanction it."
The PMO has directed Karnataka's chief secretary to immediately look into the matter.
