Mangaluru, Apr 18: United Muslim Front, an adhoc umbrella body of a few Muslim organizations in Dakshina Kannada, has planned to take ‘Justice for Qureshi’ campaign further by holding a ‘Mangaluru Chalo’ programme on May 2 at Nehru Maidan in the heart of the city.
K Ashraf, the former Manglauru Mayor, who is also convener of the Front, earlier today had announced at a press meet that the event will be held on April 28 at 3 p.m. However, later he issued a media release announcing the adjournment of the event citing a prescheduled propgramme on April 28 at the maidan.
Mr Ashraf, addressing the media persons, accused the Mangaluru city police officers of telling a series of lies in connection with the alleged illegal confinement and third degree torture of Ahmed Qureshi, a resident of Katipala, who is an accused in two attempt-to-murder cases.
Asserting that there is truth in the claim of Qureshi and his family members that he was picked up from the court premises on March 21 and kept in illegal confinement, where he was subjected to third degree torture until he was produced before the magistrate on March 27, Mr Ashraf said that there is a need to revolt against the gross human rights violation committed by the CCB police.
He said that the only intention behind UMF’s Mangaluru Chalo is to exert pressure on the authorities concerned to give justice to Qureshi, who suffered severe injuries across his body due to torture. “The torture cussed major damage to his kidneys and he had to undergo unbearable pain. However, the police continued their cruelty and tried their best to prevent him from getting medical treatment,” he said.
Rafeeuddin Kudroli, president of Uniwef and Suhail Kandak, Congress leader, were present on the occasion among others.
