Shivamogga, Apr 24: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has defended censuring Mandya superintendent of police C H Sudhir Kumar Reddy at a public programme recently.
He said BJP workers carrying black flags had tried to block his car in Malavalli, Mandya district.
The protesters (BJP workers) could have lost their lives had the driver not applied the brakes, he said. “It was a major security breach.
I asked the Mandya SP about the security arrangements. Was it wrong? I only instructed the officer to take suitable steps in future. Who would be held responsible for any accident?” he asked.
Following the incident, Malavalli town Circle Inspector B Devaraju was suspended and a departmental inquiry ordered against him and Mandya police started probing the security lapse.
IGP (southern range) Vipul Kumar said the inspector was suspended for not making proper security arrangements during the CM's visit. A probe has been ordered, he said.
Meanwhile, sources in Mandya police said an in-depth inquiry is on to ascertain the security lapses which led to two BJP workers forcibly stopping Siddaramaiah's convoy on Thursday. Following the incident, a visibly upset CM publicly lashed out at the SP at Malavalli.
Malavalli police booked a case against two BJP workers, Mahendra and Ashok Kumar, for their protest during the visit. The CM defended his action against the SP.
