Vijay bats

Brisbane (Australia), Dec 17: Indian opener Murali Vijay put Australia to the sword at the Gabba with a brilliant 144, as the visitors reached 311 for four at close of play, on the opening day of the second test on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old shared an opening partnership of 56 with Shikhar Dhawan, stalled a little in the sweltering heat after lunch and then opened up after reaching his fifth test century in the final session. His innings came to an end after five and half hours when he stepped down the pitch in search of a 23rd boundary and was caught behind off Nathan Lyon.

Ajinkya Rahane, who shared a 124-run partnership with Vijay, will resume on 75 not out on day two along with Rohit Sharma (26), as India look to inflict a first defeat on Australia at the Gabba since 1988. It was a tough first day for Australia, who lost Mitchell Marsh to a hamstring problem after lunch.

Debutant paceman Josh Hazlewood was also forced to leave the field midway through his 16th over, having taken his first two test wickets after lunch. A miserable day for Australia was compounded when Shaun, recalled to replace injured captain Michael Clarke, dropped Vijay on 36 and 102. Vijay had illustrated his rich vein of form with knocks of 53 and 99 in the first test at Adelaide and fully vindicated captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to bat first after winning the toss.

Vijay then weathered a period of pressure as Hazlewood removed Cheteshwar Pujara (18) and Virat Kohli (19). He kept his cool through the second session in which the tourists added 62 runs to their lunch score of 89-1 and hit his stride again when the bowlers tired in the afternoon sun.

Successive fours off Shane Watson took him to his century as he initially looked unaware of having reached the milestone, before whipping off his helmet and raising his bat to the visitors' dressing room.

IPLbettingsuicide.jpg

Bengaluru: Darshan Babu is an engineer who is fond of betting on cricket matches and has been placing major bets on Indian Premier League (IPL) games since 2021. He often borrows money after losing a bet, or to place one when he is short on funds. His 23-year-old wife, tired of the constant harassment by creditors, died by suicide.

Ranjitha was found hanging at her home in Karnataka's Chitradurga on March 18. According to the family, Darshan had racked up a debt of over Rs 1 crore.

He worked as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga and had been ensnared in the realm of IPL betting from 2021 to 2023. This took a major toll on the couple's finances. Allegedly, he had borrowed over Rs 1.5 crore to place bets after his luck ran out and he lost all his money. While he managed to return Rs 1 crore, cops say that he still has a pending loan of ₹ 84 lakh.

Ranjitha married Darshan in 2020. She realised the truth about Darshan's involvement in betting in 2021, claims her father Venkatesh.

In his complaint, Venkatesh said that his daughter was extremely distressed due to the constant harassment by moneylenders and this led to her suicide. He has also named 13 men who had allegedly lent the money.

He said that his son-in-law was lured into betting with a promise of quick money.

"He (Darshan) was not willing to get into betting, but the suspects forced him saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security," he said.

Cops during their investigation found a suicide note, where she detailed the harassment they faced. Darshan and Ranjitha have a two-year-old son.
