Mangalore, 4 Jan: Historic Garadi Nema of the city is underway at Garodi near Pump-well in the city.

The five-day festivities, in memory of Tulunadu’s valiant twin heroes Koti and Chennaya, are attracting large crowds from all over the city.

Koti-Chennaya Nema was performed on Saturday, the 4th day of the annual ritual.

The twin heroes of Tulunadu, who lived around 500 years ago, had fought for the truth and for the downtrodden.

They died while fighting the enemies near Yenmoor. Later on memorials called Garadi were built in the name of Koti and Chennaya all over Tulunadu. The term Garadi is derived from word Garadi which means gymnasium. Once in a year festivals called Nema is celebrated in these Garadis.

The twins are also known as Karnika purushas. The fact that  they are worshiped in Garadis and not in houses  indicates the high esteem they are held in.
