Muscat, July 10: One more low-wage Indian worker has taken his life in Oman. Jisine Govindan, a 30-year-old mason, who was reported missing by his friends last Friday, was found hanging from a tree in Oman’s southern town of Salalah on Monday.

In the first two months of this year, 15 Indian workers committed suicide, prompting cultural organisations to run anti-suicide campaigns across the country.

The campaigns run by two groups have brought down the suicide rate in subsequent months but social workers are still concerned about the increasing suicides this year.

“Jesin’s body was found hanging from a tree at a garden behind the old Omantel building in Salalah,” Manpreet Singh, Chairman of the Indian Social Club in Salalah, informed.

“He probably took his life on Friday and his body was found only on Monday thus the remains are so putrid that it is difficult to embalm,” a social worker from Salalah said.

Singh also confirmed that the doctors at the morgue have ruled out sending the remains of Jisine to India. “Social workers and his colleagues will cremate him in Salalah once the body is handed over by the police,” he said.

The deceased, who has been working in Salalah for six years, was scheduled to go home for his marriage.

According to his friends and colleagues, Jisine had been talking about suicide for some time.
