Madikeri, April 24: Thirty-two-year-old elephant Vijaya died at the Dubare Elephant Camp, near Kushalnagar in Kodagu distict on Friday, April 23.
The mammal was captured during “Operation Elephant” that was taken up in the district in January 2009 at the Avaregunda forests in the Dubare Reserve Forests range.
It had fallen sick six months ago, but its condition had worsened about three months back, sources said. Veterinarian Srinivas was treating the elephant but it succumbed to death on Friday morning.
Postmortem was conducted and the carcass burnt in the forests the same evening. Tourists were not allowed to enter the Dubare Elephant Camp. Elephant safari was cancelled for the day.
