Mangalore, April 29: An Army recruiment rally is being organized at Mangala Stadium, Mangalore, under the aegis of Recruiting Zone, Bangalore. The rally will go on till May 4.
Col C.R Deshpande, Director, Army Recruiting Office, Mangalore speaking to the media persons in a press meet held at Mangala Stadium on Thursday, April 29, revealed that the rally is being held all over India and the Mangalore rally will determine the selection of candidates from nine districts of Karnataka i.e. Dakshina Kannada, Uttar kannada, Kodagu, Shimoga, Hassan, Udupi, Davangere, Chikmagalur and Chitradurga. The rally is being organized with absolute transparency, open to the media as well as the public, he said.
The candidates initially are put through a physical fitness test, in which they are made to run a distance of one mile in 6 minutes, do pull ups, jump across a nine feet ditch and walk across a horizontal bar. They are then examined for height, weight and chest. The successful candidates would be then asked to go through a written exam and those who pass under merit criterion, would be enrolled in the Army, he disclosed.
In the past three days about 940 candidates have been screened and around 2000 candidates are expected to participate in the days to come.
The Army wants rural youth to get equal opportunities and the district administrations are cooperating by rendering necessary assistance. The Army requires youth qualified in Maths and Science to fill in technical vacancies.
After training, a Jawan would take home a monthly salary of approximately Rs. 10,000/- with other benefits such as free clothing, ration, accommodation, medical benefits and free railway facilities as well.
