Mangalore, April 30: More than three months after the inception of a new Police Commissionerate in Mangalore, senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh took charge as its first official Commissioner on Friday, April 30.

Gopal B Hosur, the Inspector General of Police of West Range, who was temporarily, in-charge of the new Commissionerate, formally handed over the title to Singh in an indoor ceremony at the former’s office in the city.

Singh is no stranger to Mangalore, as he had once served as Dakshina Kannada's 121st Superintendent of Police between December 2000 and February 2004.

Addressing the media persons at the SP office, where he will be running operations from, until the return of Subrahmanyeshwara Rao, who is currently undergoing training in Hyderabad, after assuming power Singh said that good policing is his priority.

“The commissionerate and commissioner post is very new to Mangaloreans. The entire set up is new. But, I hope this would bring a good name to Karnataka police” he said, adding “I need good cooperation from all the police officials.”

“The importance of Commssionerate is now obvious. In the cities of Mysore, Hubli and Dharvad separate Commissionerates have come up already and are working successfully under powerful Commissioners. The metropolitan city of Bangalore too has a different type of Commissionerate. It is Mangalore’s turn now”, he said.

He said narcotic cells and CID cells will cooperate with the Commissionerate and new wings too will be added to it as per the demands.

Singh further said that Director-General of Police will oversee the performance of the Commissionerate. “I have to report to the DGP directly” he informed.

The Commissionerate includes 15 police stations with Inspector-level Station House Officers. Each police station will get two PSIs and two traffic sub divisions (North and South).

“The man power of Commissionerate is currently very poor and there is a need to include additional police personnel in order to strengthen it”, the new Commissioner said.

He is also expected to take temporary charge as the district Superintendent of Police. At present, Additional Superintendent of Police R. Ramesh is holding the charge in the absence of Rao.

Meanwhile, Gopal Hosur is expected to continue as the Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) and head of the Anti-Naxal Force.
