Mangaluru, Oct 16: A 45-year-old government school teacher who was battling for life due to coronavirus, died at a private hospital on Friday morning.

Padmakshi N was admitted to a hospital on September 29. She and her husband Shasikanth Y, a teacher at DJ Higher Primary Aided School, were part of the Vidyagama programme.

The couple tested positive for Covid-19 last month. Shasikanth recovered but Padmakshi remained critical.

Padmakshi’s daughter, Aishwarya Jain Y, an engineering student, confirmed that her mother, who was in a critical condition due to severe lung infection, breathed her last around 9am on Friday.

This is the first death of a government teacher due to coronavirus infection in the coastal district.

A few days ago, in a post on social media which has since been widely shared, Aishwarya revealed how Vidyagama had “crippled” her family.

Government after noticing the family plight, rushed to help them. Minister for primary and secondary education S Suresh Kumar had said that the cost of Padmakshi treatment will be borne by the government after the post went viral.
