Bengaluru, Oct 17: Issuing threats to chief minister H D Kumaraswamy led Congress-JD(S) coalition government against holding Tipu Jayanti, BJP leader and former deputy chief minister K S Eshwarappa has said that his party will not keep quite if the state government goes ahead with the celebrations.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Eshwarappa said, “We urge the government to drop the celebrations. However, if they go ahead, we as the principal opposition party, know what to do.” Eshwarappa said in the past too there had been an opposition to the celebrations.
The warning comes after Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said the government will hold Tipu Jayanthi celebrations across the state next month. The BJP had made it a poll issue during the Assembly polls held earlier this year.
Meanwhile, speaking after inaugurating Dasara at Srirangapatna in Mandya district, Kumaraswamy said that BJP leaders oppose Tipu Jayanthi ahead of elections.
BJP slammed for making Tipu poll issue
Meanwhile, former minister M C Nanaiah slammed BJP for making Tipu Jayanti an issue for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing reporters in Kodagu, he urged the government to initiate action against the politicians who disturb the social fabric of society for political gain.
“The BJP and Sangh Parivar have been using Tipu Jayanti for their selfish motive. It is not right on the part of a political party to use innocent people to stage protests,” he added.
He further said that the elected representatives should pass a resolution in the legislative assembly and council discontinuing Tipu Jayanti celebrations by the government.
