Kasaragod, May 21: In a daredevil operation, the Kasaragod police arrested two youths as they tried to extort Rs 1 lakh ransom from a Mangalurean youth at Bekur near Kumbla early on Sunday.
A team of police headed by Kumbla Circle Inspector K Premsadan arrested local youths Munawar alias Munna, 20, and Sahid alias Sajir, 31, both involved in a series of criminal cases.
One Lester D'Souza, 33, a part-time tuition teacher hailing from Mangaluru, had disposed of a portion of a recently purchased property to find resources to build a house.
On learning about this, the duo chased him in a car and thrashed him, telling him to shell out Rs 4 lakh he had received from the property sale. On failing to grab the money from the youth, the duo contacted the person who had purchased his property at Kadambar near Manjeswaram and sought Rs 1 lakh for his release.
As the badly bruised man tried to flee from the locality, the buyer informed the police in Thiruvananthapuram.
They contacted the Kasaragod SP office that alerted Mr. Premsadan, who after a search operation, traced the location of the duo with the help of the cyber police.
The police later arrested the duo, charging them under provisions of IPC Section 364 (kidnapping for ransom) and 395 (dacoity).
The police also impounded the car and a motorcycle used in their operation besides taking another suspect involved in the extortion into custody, Mr. Premsadan said.
The duo, produced at the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here, were remanded in two weeks’ judicial custody.
