Mangalore, September 8: The Sri Ramakrishna College Principal Naveen Shetty K, who is accused of harassing a 19 year old girl, who recently attempted to commit suicide, has defended his action of imposing fines on students for missing classes and calling parents of the students.
Addressing media persons here on Thursday, Mr Shetty denied the allegation made by students of the same college that he had harassed Sholka Shetty, a student of second year B Com. He said that there was nothing wrong in asking students to fetch their parents to the College to inform about their conduct.
He said that during the admission all the students agreed to obey the rules and regulation of the college. As per the norms of the college, a student cannot skip the class without prior permission. However, students of the second year B Com had violated this norm, by staging a mass bunk on September 29, a day ahead of Talents Day.
For this misconduct, the students were fined as per regulations. Later, Sloka Shetty and another student were found to have prompted their classmates to skip the classes and proceed for practicing the programme to be given on the Talents Day. “For this reason we had called their parents to the college,” he said.
The principal said he had personally phoned Shloka's mother, as she failed to fetch parents to the class. However, last Tuesday afternoon he was shocked to hear news that she had attempted to commit suicide by consuming phenyl stored at the toilet of the College, he said.
