Kannur/Udupi, Oct 18: Four members of a family were killed and four others injured when their car collided with a tanker truck early on Wednesday on the national highway near Payyannur in Kerala.
Police said eight people were travelling in the car to Mookambika temple at Kollur in Karnataka’s coastal district of Udupi when the mishap happened around 4.30am at Kendriya Vidyalaya bus stop near Edat. The truck was coming from Mangaluru side.
The deceased have been identified as Thrissur native (Koorkenchery) Bindulal Sreedharan (42), his daughter Diya (11) and his sister's children Tharun (16) and Aishwarya (12). Four others, who were injured, have been admitted to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital.
Aishwarya died at the hospital while the others died on the spot, said police. The flying squad reached the spot immediately after the accident and took them to the hospital.
Though it is suspected that speeding might have caused the accident, the truck driver has been taken into custody for questioning. The exact reason is yet to be ascertained, said police. In the recent past, there have been many accidents on the highway stretch, mainly due to speeding, especially in the early morning hours.
Though there is highway patrol and an interceptor to track the speeding vehicles, more surveillance measures are needed to handle this issue, said district police chief G Siva Vikram.
"Though we can strengthen surveillance and install speed breakers, that alone would not address the issue. People should have the basic sense of security and there should be some restriction on driving during early hours," he said, adding that more camera would be installed on the highway and adding one more interceptor would be a good option.
