Mangalore, Jan 21: The year 2013 marks glorious 100 years of Indian Cinema, beginning from the time Dadasaheb Phalke made the first feature film 'Raja Harishchandra' in 1913.

To commemorate the milestone, the Department of Mass Communication (MCMS) at St Aloysius College, Mangalore, chose the theme 'Celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema' as their theme for Media Manthan '13, the two-day national-level media fest, which was inaugurated on Monday at Eric Mathias Hall in the college.

With movie posters and snap-shots of film actors dotting the venue, Media Manthan '13, truly celebrated the existence of Indian cinema, with various competitions named after Bollywood movies and screening of movies scheduled over the two days.

Speaking after inaugurating the two-day media event, District Information Officer Rohini K said that visual media was so powerful that it could create an unimaginable impact on the masses. “Cinema is a reflection of our society; it is entertainment, education and information incorporated in one. It also helps in moulding public opinion. Indian cinema, despite all its peculiarities, has been a reflection of socio-economic, political, and cultural changes in our country,” she said, lauding the students' efforts and encouraging them to make the best use of opportunities.

Film director Sandeep Malani and Tulu movie producer Vijayakumar Kodialbail of 'Oriyardori Asal' fame were honoured during the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kodialbail lamented that although Tulu was a popular regional language, Tulu cinema lagged behind, with just 44 films in Tulu language made over 42 years. This is because Tulu-ites themselves do not opt to watch Tulu films. However, the notion that Tulu cinema would not be appreciated was proved wrong with the movie 'Oriyardori Asal' which achieved a breakthrough and grabbed huge earnings in the box-office, he said, calling for greater support for movies made in Kannada, Tulu, Kodava and Konkani languages.

Delivering the presidential address, college principal Fr Swebert D'Silva said that films ought to depict the real life of people and be patronised by the audience. But more often than not, reality is discarded to make way for illusions, he said, and wished media to be more indifferent to enticement and to help in proclaiming the truth. Media should depict values in a real way and make the world a better place, he said.

The inter-collegiate fest saw several participants from around 15 colleges signing up for competitions such as 8x10 Tasveer (Photography), Bol Bachchan (RJ Hunt), Taare Zameen Par (Quiz), Pehchaan Kaun (Mock Press), Kahani (Trailer-making), Golmaal (Movie Spoof), Viraam (Ad-making), Makhdi Ki Jaal (Web Designing), Peepli Live (Video Bulletin) and Chitragupt (Film Review) spread over the two days.

The inaugural ceremony was followed by a panel discussion on 'Cultural diversity in Indian cinema' by Manu Chakravarthy, Phaniraj and Samartha Sahil.

As part of the event, there will be free screening of the Kannada movie 'Kanasemba Kudureyaneri' directed by Girish Kasaravalli at Bharath BIG Cinemas on Monday at 6.30 p.m.

Bengaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has detained two suspects in connection with the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru, sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The preliminary probe has revealed that the two suspects were in direct contact with the suspected bomber.

The NIA sleuths have picked up the suspects from an area in the state capital. However, a statement is yet to be made by the NIA in this regard.

Even as the investigating agencies, both NIA and state special wing CCB teams have launched an extensive search operation in various states, the bomber has remained elusive. The authorities had obtained the bomber’s images and videos from CCTV footage on March 1, soon after the incident.

Sources said that the sleuths were suspecting that the bomber had come from Tamil Nadu and was staying in a neighbouring state for two months before carrying out the blast.

The hair samples of the accused were gathered from the hat of the accused which he abandoned in Bengaluru near a religious place. The authorities have sent the samples for the DNA testing and were hoping for a breakthrough.

The Rameshwaram Cafe bomb blast took place on March 1 on the International Technology Park Limited (ITPL) road in the Brookfield area. Low intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used to carry out the blast and nine persons were injured in the incident.

Mangaluru: The Mangalore International Airport (MIA) will connect to a new domestic destination with the introduction of a non-stop flight to Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu.

The non-stop service, once-a-week, will operate on Wednesday (from TIA) and Thursday (from MIA), starting April 3. Air India Express will operate the flight.

The flight is expected to help those taking up a pilgrimage to Vailankani shrine.

Sources from the AIE said that the airline carrier decided to fly non-stop between the two southern Indian cities as a flight to Jeddah, which will start from April 3, arrives from Tiruchirappalli International Airport.

“It is a ferry or positional flight from TIA to MIA. Instead of flying empty, the management has decided to run it as a commercial flight. This will help both passengers and the airline. The airline will deploy Boeing 737-800 aircraft with a 186-seater all-economy configuration on this route.

The same flight, after landing in MIA, will further fly to Jeddah,” a source said.

The flight IX 1498 will depart every Thursday at 5am from MIA to TIA. The TIA-MIA flight IX 1499 departs at 12.50pm. It is a one-hour nonstop flight. The same flights will also operate nonstop between Jeddah and MIA.

The non-stop flight IX 499 will depart MIA at 2.50pm and reach King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah at 6.25pm. The IX498, will depart from Jeddah at 7.25pm and reach MIA early at 3.40am.

Bengaluru, Mar 19: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that the Congress will split in three months after the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and its impact will be visible on the Siddaramaiah-led state government.

"Due to internal squabbles, the state government will not last long," the BJP leader said.

Talking to reporters on Monday, he said the sitting MP from the Gadag-Haveri constituency, Shivakumar Udasi, has done a lot of development work and implemented the Central government's schemes effectively.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surely become the PM for the third time. The overall response has been good in the Gadag-Haveri Lok Sabha constituency," the former Karnataka chief minister said.

Asked if he was contesting the election in a half-hearted manner in the Gadag-Haveri seat, Bommai said "such a question does not arise when the party's high command gives instructions".

He said he would respect his opponent and not take anyone lightly.
