Mangalore, Jul 23: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Karnataka Dalitha Sangharsha Samithi (KDSS) has urged the state and the Central government that the Mangalore International Airport be named after Dr B R Ambedkar, who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement.

Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, state convenor of the Samithi M Devadas said that a large number of Dalits had been displaced from Kenjar, Malavoor, Kolambi and Adyapady for the construction of the new airport in Bajpe, and hence it was appropriate that the airport be named after Dr Ambedkar.

A memorandum in this regard has been submitted to the district administration, state government, Minister for Fisheries Abhaychandra Jain and Civil Aviation Ministry, he said.
