Mangalore, Jan 2: The silver jubilee celebrations of Karnataka State Sunni Students' Federation (SSF) commenced with the dowry-free mass marriage of 25 Muslim couples from the state at the inaugural ceremony, held at Nehru Maidan in the city on Thursday.
The 'Nikah' ceremony of 25 couples was performed by Shaikhuna Assayyed Abdurrahman Al-Bukhari and Shaikhuna M A Abdul Khader Musliyar.
In his inaugural address, general secretary of All India Sunni Ulema Federation Kanthapuram A P Aboobakkar Musliyar said that in the present day scenario, conducting marriages without dowry had become difficult for the families of young girls in the community.
“Dowry has become more of a business, the cost of which families of girls had to bear. Conducting dowry-free marriages is a good way to end the evil system of dowry,” he said lauding the efforts of the organizers in putting up a event worth emulating.
“Such programmes will be helpful for the marriage and education of girls from the underprivileged sections of the community,” he said.
Chancellor of Yenepoya University Y Abdullah Kunhi released the logo of the silver jubilee celebration of the federation. Usman Haji Mittur released a memorial edition 'Ishara'.
As a part of the silver jubilee celebrations, 25,000 SSF members will take a ceremonial oath pledging not to demand dowry.
Several prominent personalities took part in the inaugural ceremony.
