Mangalore, Feb 7: In a disgusting development, local media too have joined the “rumour mission” launched by trouble mongers in Ullal. A Mangalore based news portal on Friday went on to claim that police had imposed curfew in Ullal.

The rumours of curfew and violence caused fresh tensions in Ullal and surrounding areas which were slowly returning to normalcy.

However, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim and Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra brushed aside the rumours of curfew.

Both of them asserted that situation was under control in Ullal.

Mr Ibrahim urged the people not to pay attention to the false rumours.

“The town is returning to normalcy. Prohibitory orders under section 144 have been imposed in the region for two days,” he said.

He also said that security measures have been stepped up across Masjids in Ullal and surrounding areas and police have been asked to keep vigil during Juma prayers.

Mr Hithendra stated that around 65 persons have been arrested and 10 more persons have been detained in connection with the various untoward incidents.

He said that additional police have been deployed in sensitive areas and around places of worships to prevent recurrence of untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, in a message to the local Muslims, U S Hamza, president of Ullal Juma Masjid, said that police have requested to finish Juma prayers between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
